Generalist Designer
Hiring someone who can do a little bit of everything, and wants to do the best work of their lives without worrying about the boundary of their role.
About Public Knowledge
Public Knowledge Studio is a small design studio based in New Delhi. We primarily work with startups to design brands, landing pages, digital products and experiences. Our work often involves new technologies, and we actively explore new ways of designing and producing digital artefacts — with AI and otherwise. We value thoughtful work, curiosity about new tools and technologies, and learning by doing. Our studio is small by design, and everyone on the team has meaningful influence over the work we do and how the studio evolves.
Location
This position is work from office in our studio in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. Remote or hybrid negotiable for the right candidate.
The Role
This role is best suited to designers who enjoy working across disciplines. We work with startups, which means every project is different, and as a team we excel at doing all of the different things a young startup needs. Some days you might be shaping a brand identity, other days designing a product interface, prototyping a website, or experimenting with motion and AI tools. The ideal person for this role is self-directed, curious, and comfortable moving between ideation and execution. You'll work closely with startup founders and will have a high degree of ownership on projects. You will often be responsible for seeing ideas through to a polished outcome. If you're looking for a highly specialised product design role, this position will likely feel too broad.
What you'll do
- Shape visual identities and brand systems for early-stage startups
- Design marketing websites and product landing pages
- Build websites using tools like Framer, Webflow, or code
- Design interfaces and flows for early-stage digital products
- Use motion, video, or lightweight animation to explain ideas (especially when the startup has no product ready yet)
- Prototyping concepts directly in code (HTML/CSS, frameworks, AI-assisted tools)
- Working closely with founders to translate early visions into clear artefacts that resonate with investors and early customers
- Exploring new tools and workflows that improve how we design and ship work
- Building small internal tools or systems when existing tools fall short
What We're Looking For
- 2–4 years of experience in branding, web design, product design, software engineering, product management or related field
- A strong portfolio that demonstrates visual craft and systems thinking
- Comfort using code as a creative tool — not necessarily as a full-time developer, but enough to be dangerous
- Curiosity about AI, emerging tools, and unconventional design workflows
- Clear communication and the ability to execute independently
Signals We Look For in Portfolios
- Prototyping ideas in code
- High degree of visual polish
- Startup experience or other spaces with rapid iteration
- Experiments with AI or generative design tools
- Personal projects and self-initiated explorations
- Evidence of process and reasoning, not just polished outputs
- Work that shows curiosity about how things are built
Perks
- Office lunch
- Access to any AI tool you want to use
- Yearly team offsite (last one was in Bangkok!)
How to Apply
- Send your portfolio to careers@publicknowledge.co
- Include a link to something you've made recently that you're proud of
- What would be a dream project for you?
